The Cenotes of Bacalar

With its crystal-clear water, swimming in a cenote is an activity you can't miss in Bacalar!

Cenotes are natural water wells (they can be open-air, underground, or even hidden in caves) found by the thousands throughout the Yucatán Peninsula.

Here are the Cenotes of Bacalar:

Cenote Azul

This cenote, surrounded by trees, is the only one without direct access to the lagoon. Entrance fee is 25 pesos, open from 10 am to 6 pm, located at Carr. Federal 307, Chetumal-Cancun Km 34, Bacalar (a taxi from downtown Bacalar costs around 50 pesos). Don't confuse it with the Cenote Azul in Playa del Carmen!

Cenote Cocalitos

Cocalitos is also known as the Sanctuary of Stromatolites – they are living fossils of 3.5 billion years and should not be touched because they are fragile! In Cocalitos, you'll find hammocks and water swings, and you can also go kayaking and snorkeling. Entrance fee is 50 pesos, open from 9 am to 6 pm. It's located near Cenote Azul, so it's easy to visit both.

Cenote Esmeralda

Different from other cenotes because it is located in the middle of Bacalar Lagoon. It's unique and has a beautiful blue contrast where the water flows into the lagoon.
